Eggs & Issues Special Edition: Construction, Development & the
Future of Northern Rhode Island
The Northern Rhode Island
Chamber of Commerce urges voters
to vote Yes on Question 3 on November 3.
Question 3 is a $100 million investment in places and industries that are
already producing jobs. It puts $55 million into getting sites ready for employ-
ers, including cleanup of contaminated land, and $45 million into life sciences,
the ocean economy, and defense. None of it goes to state operating costs.
We already know this model works. Quonset is home to about 15,000 jobs
at 250 companies and generates nearly $2 billion a year in income for Rhode
Island families. That didnt happen by accident. The state got the land ready,
and employers showed up.
Northern Rhode Island knows the other side of that story. Our communi-
ties were built on mills and manufacturing, and many still carry former indus-
trial land that sits empty because it isnt ready for a new tenant. Brownfield
cleanup is how that land goes back to work. When a site is ready, a growing
company can say yes to Rhode Island instead of looking across the border.
Employers dont wait. When a company is ready to grow, it goes where
the site is ready, said Monika Zuluaga, President and CEO of the Northern
Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce. Question 3 is a practical investment
in whats already working. We want to see this kind of readiness reach every
corner of the state, including Northern Rhode Island.
The Chamber represents businesses across Northern Rhode Island, from
small family-owned shops to major regional employers. Our members need a
state that competes for jobs and wins. Question 3 helps us do that.
